Methodology

How the numbers were made

Population. The sample is every product AppClap served on the snapshot date: a listing with a public page, a status of active or beta, an enriched crawl of the vendor's own site, and a search embedding. Nothing was sampled or hand-picked. The count is total_products.

Contact sales. A product counts as gating a plan behind contact sales when at least one of its stored plans has no price and the plan's name or description contains contact, custom, enterprise, quote, talk to, sales or request. The match is a plain substring, case-insensitive. The count is contact_sales_n and the share is contact_sales_pct. contact_sales_with_public_paid_plan_n says how many of those products also publish a priced plan beside the gated one.

No public price. A product counts as publishing no entry price when none of its stored plans carries a price and no monthly entry price is stored for it: no_public_price_n and no_public_price_pct. no_public_price_no_plans_n is the part of that group with no plan rows at all, which is missing data on our side as often as a hidden price on the vendor's.

Free tiers and trials. free_tier_pct and free_trial_pct count only products where the fact is confirmed. Products not assessed yet are counted separately in free_tier_unknown_n and free_trial_unknown_n, never as a no.

Entry prices. The entry price is the cheapest paid plan per month in USD, or $0 for an app with no paid plan. A price in another currency enters through a stored USD equivalent, never through a guessed conversion. priced_pct is the share with a known entry price. median_entry_price_usd is the median across those products, including the $0 of fully free apps. median_paid_entry_price_usd is the same median over products whose cheapest plan costs more than $0.

Categories. Each product is counted once, under its primary category, and only categories with at least 50 products appear in the per-category table (category, products). Other is the catalog's own bucket for products that fit no named category. Shares are percentages of the products in that row, rounded to one decimal.

Reruns. Every number here is a snapshot of the catalog on the date above, produced by read-only queries against it and saved as the CSVs you can download. A rerun is a new dated snapshot, not an overwrite, so a number cited from this page stays checkable.

Every price in the catalog is checked against the vendor's own pricing page and carries the date it was last looked at. AppClap sells no placements, and claiming a listing never changes its rank. How prices are read, step by step, is in the methodology.
