XMPP (Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol) is an open XML technology for real-time communication, powering instant messaging, presence, multi-party chat, voice and video calls, collaboration, IoT, and generalized routing of XML data. It is a protocol maintained by the XSF, not owned by any single company, and has been free and open since 1999. Developers can build or integrate software with XMPP using its published specifications, and many client and server implementations exist across platforms and languages.
