Plainwork
Automation that learns by watching, not by being told·plainwork.com
Plainwork is a desktop application that watches how you work on your device, using local screen and activity capture to detect repetitive workflows across any app. It proposes automations in plain language for approval before running them, then executes approved habits directly in the same apps you already use, without integrations or a workflow builder. Capture, pattern detection, and storage all happen locally and encrypted on the user's device; only the name and steps of an approved habit sync, and any step that needs LLM reasoning is sent off-device in isolation and deleted immediately after it runs.
What it's for
Features 20
- Automatic habit detection from repeated sequences (3+ repeats within a rolling 7-day window)
- Automatic retry with increasing delay when a step doesn't succeed
- Block specific sites (e.g. banking) from capture and automation
- Data encrypted at rest with AES-256 and signed with HMAC-SHA512
- Direct integrations for cloud tools such as Gmail, Slack, and QuickBooks
- Encryption key stored in the macOS Keychain
- Exclude specific apps from capture
- Isolated, one-off cloud execution for steps needing LLM reasoning, deleted after the step runs
- Local, on-device screen and click capture
- One-time task demonstration ('show it once') to teach a habit immediately
- Only approved habit name and steps sync; raw screen data never syncs
- Optional zero-knowledge passphrase backup for switching devices
- Pause capture at any time from the tray
- Runs approved habits directly in real apps via the same interfaces screen readers use, no API needed
- Self-checking execution: verifies each step's result before continuing
- Self-healing: rewrites a failing step once using another execution layer or a model
- Step-by-step proposal review before any automation runs
- Stops and reports instead of blind-retrying when a step keeps failing
- Wipe the last hour or all captured data instantly
- Works with legacy, internal, and login-walled tools without integrations
