The Notion Alternatives Without AI in the Price

Notion announced a new credit system on October 19: every Business seat now includes 1,500 Standard and 500 Select AI credits a month, existing customers move over on November 2, and extra credits cost $10 per 1,000. AppFlowy is an open source Notion alternative with about seventy-eight thousand GitHub stars where the AI is a trial you can ignore, and it has five serious neighbours.

A large pale blue open notebook with dark text bars and a checklist block on its pages, and to its right a small dark coin box with a pale slot whose trail of three outlined coins fades out before reaching the book

Notion used to sell a place to write things down. On October 19 it started selling credits to think with, and from November 2 every Business seat carries a monthly allowance of them, plus a meter for more, whether anyone on the team asked.

AppFlowy is what happens when someone decides the notebook shouldn't need a coin slot.

The best Notion alternative without AI in the price is AppFlowy for most people: AGPL-3.0, free on the Personal plan and free to self-host, with AI responses sold as a limited trial you can ignore and a Local AI option you run yourself (checked Oct 31, 2026). AFFiNE is the pick if you want a whiteboard next to your docs, with AI as a separate $8.90 add-on; Docmost if you need a team wiki; SiYuan if you want a local-first Notion whose extras cost a one-time $64; Anytype if privacy is the point; and BookStack if you want a wiki whose website does not mention AI once.

What changed at Notion

Notion's new credit system, announced on its blog on October 19, 2026, folds all AI usage into two monthly allowances on every Business and Enterprise seat: 1,500 Standard credits, where Notion picks the model, and 500 Select credits, where you pick it or run Custom Agents. New customers are on it now, existing workspaces move over on November 2, 2026, and from December 1 AI Meeting Notes draw on Standard credits too (Notion help centre, checked Oct 31, 2026). Extra credits cost $10 per 1,000 a month, or $13 per 1,000 bought annually.

The seat price did not change: Business is $20 per member a month paid annually (Notion's own startup page, Oct 31, 2026), and from Europe the pricing page shows €19.50. What changed is what the seat is for. Notion AI is available only on Business and Enterprise, Free and Plus get a trial, and no Business seat is sold without the credits.

Notion's AI is not an add-on you can decline. It is 2,000 credits a month baked into every Business seat, and the meter for more starts at $10 per 1,000.

The Notion alternatives without AI in the price

Of the 696 notes and docs tools in the AppClap catalog (Oct 31, 2026), 144 are open source and 129 can be self-hosted.

AppFlowy

AppFlowy is the closest Notion look-alike: pages, databases, kanban and calendar views, on desktop and mobile. Personal is $0 and Pro is $12 per member a month billed annually (checked Oct 31, 2026). The licence is AGPL-3.0, with about seventy-eight thousand stars (repo). The pricing page lists AI responses as a limited trial on both plans, plus a Local AI row for a model on your own machine, so the AI is there but not in the seat. It is best for a team that wants the same shape of tool it is leaving. The drawback is a self-hosted server made of several containers, not one binary.

AFFiNE

AFFiNE puts a block editor and an infinite whiteboard in one local-first app with cloud sync on top. The free tier is the local app plus Cloud Basic with 10 GB and up to 3 members; Pro is $6.75 a month billed annually and Team is $10 per seat a month (checked Oct 31, 2026). AFFiNE AI is a separate add-on at $8.90 a month billed annually: the AI has its own price tag and you can simply not buy it. The editor is MIT, with about seventy-four thousand stars (repo). It is best for people who think on a canvas. The drawback is that the sync server sits under AFFiNE's own enterprise licence, not MIT.

Docmost

Docmost is a team wiki with real-time editing, spaces and full-text search. The Community edition is free and AGPL-3.0, with about twenty-two thousand stars (repo); Business is $6 per seat a month billed annually with a 10-seat minimum (checked Oct 31, 2026). AI search, AI assistant and MCP support are Business-only and run on a model you bring, from Ollama to OpenAI. It is best for a company wiki with permissions. The drawback is that databases and kanban are Business-only too.

SiYuan

SiYuan is a local-first block editor with references, databases and flashcards, stored as files on your disk. The app is free; PRO features such as S3 and WebDAV sync are a one-time $64, shown beside a struck-out $96 on Oct 31, 2026. The licence is AGPL-3.0, with about forty-seven thousand stars (repo). AI writing and Q&A exist as an optional OpenAI API integration where you supply the key, so leave the field empty and there is no AI. It is best for one person who wants Notion's blocks without Notion's server. The drawback is that sync is the paid part.

Anytype

Anytype is an offline-first, end-to-end encrypted workspace with blocks, databases and kanban that syncs peer-to-peer. Free includes 100 MB of remote storage; Plus is $4 a month, Pro $8 and Ultra $16 (checked Oct 31, 2026), and self-hosting your own network needs no membership. The pricing page lists no AI feature at all. The code is under the Any Source Available License 1.0, not an OSI open source licence, and the desktop repo has about nine thousand stars (repo). It is best for people who want the vault on their own device. The drawback is that licence.

BookStack

BookStack is a self-hosted wiki organised as shelves, books, chapters and pages. It is free and MIT, with about nineteen thousand stars (repo), and the project sells support plans rather than seats (checked Oct 31, 2026). Its website does not mention AI once. It is best for documentation that has to outlive its author. The drawback is that it is a wiki: no databases, no kanban, no Notion-style blocks.

Joplin (AGPL-3.0, about fifty-seven thousand stars) and Outline (Business Source License, free self-hosted edition without the AI question-answering) are the two neighbours worth a look (checked Oct 31, 2026).

Is Notion AI free?

No. Notion AI is included only in the Business and Enterprise plans, and Free and Plus users get a limited trial (Notion help centre, Oct 31, 2026). On Business, the $20 per member a month seat includes 1,500 Standard and 500 Select credits with no rollover; once they run out, the features pause until the next reset unless an admin turns on workspace credits at $10 per 1,000.

Which Notion alternative has no AI at all?

BookStack and Anytype are the two on this list with no AI feature on their pricing pages or websites (checked Oct 31, 2026). AppFlowy, AFFiNE, Docmost and SiYuan have AI, but off the seat price: a trial, a separate add-on, a Business-only feature on your own model, or an empty API key field. For all six, the AI is not in the price.

What you actually take on

Self-hosting a Notion alternative means owning the sync server, which is the part Notion makes invisible: backups, upgrades and the mobile app pointing at your domain are now your jobs. Notion earns its seat when the whole company lives in it. Its databases, permissions and connections to Slack and GitHub run deeper than any of the six, and someone else runs the servers. If your team actually uses the agents, 2,000 credits inside a $20 seat may be the cheapest AI it buys.

  1. 1Do you want AI in your notes at all, or did it arrive with the invoice?
  2. 2Is someone on the team comfortable keeping a Docker stack alive?
  3. 3Do you need Notion-style databases and kanban, or is a wiki enough?
  4. 4If the sync server dies on a Sunday, is that a problem you would rather own or outsource?

We keep circling this pattern at AppClap, because the whole job is helping you find the tool that actually fits, and “without AI” is now a filter people type into the search box. The reaper has worked down the hallway past dictation, deploys, the CRM, the front door and the task board, and today he is at the team notebook, which just grew a coin slot. Spend thirty seconds on a notes app without AI credits that I can host myself, compare the Notion alternatives side by side, and ask the question this series always ends on: do you want to rent the notebook, or own it?
